Plot:

The TARDIS is captured by the evil Celestial Toymaker who forces the Doctor, Dodo, and Steven to play his games... and the price for losing is eternal imprisonment as dolls! Can the Doctor, Dodo, and Steven keep from being turned into inanimate objects that thousands of children will gleefully dress and undress for the rest of time?

Analysis:

Only one episode still exists of this story, so for much of it I had to make due with the novelization. All in all, this is a mixed bag for Dodo. Sure, she gets the final roll on the dice needed to win the final game, and she finds the key in the pie as well. At the same time, we've also got Dodo almost freezing herself to death in the chairs—what's with that? "Gee, I have a one-out-of-three chance of living if I sit down in a chair. I think I'll just plop my butt down into one!"

And then there's the final game with Cyril. Dodo's brain is clearly on vacation for all of episode four. She's incapable of moving from space to space without counting out loud, she doesn't notice when Steven steals her turn, lets him grope her every time he's near her (it's really quite disturbing!), and falls for Cyril's faked injury. What happened, Dodo? I started wondering if perhaps Dodo was possessed by the Celestial Toymaker to try and trip them up. Bad Brian Hayles, making our beloved Dodo such a... well, such a dodo.

A cute idea for a story and there are some fun bits (Michael Gough steals the show, a pity he spends most of his time posing for the Doctor's benefit!) but you can tell that a certain beloved series was running really low on budget... minimal sets, minimal actors, and they couldn't even afford to write Dodo a brain...

The Quotable Dodo:

Dodo sees Cyril's not-at-all-scary mask: "Aaaaahhhhhhiiiieeeeeeeekkkkkk!"

Dodo looks at Cyril's electrocuted body: "What happened?"

Dodo looks at Steven wincing in pain: "Are you all right?"

Dodo becomes a drug pusher: "Hey, let's celebrate with these!"

Fab Pictures:

"Say Doc, could we ride this all the way home?"

Dodo and Steven looking GROOOOVY!

Dodo, quit playing around!
